A growing need for accurate and reliable gas detection is driven by global challenges such as air pollution, climate change, and the transition toward cleaner energy systems. Recent advances in innovative materials, sensing mechanisms, and system integration has significantly improved the performance of gas sensors. At the same time, the deployment of distributed and IoT-enabled sensing networks is enabling continuous, large-scale monitoring of gases in both urban and industrial environments.

This special session focuses on recent advances in gas sensing technologies and measurement systems for environmental monitoring, industrial safety, and sustainability. The session will address both fundamental and application-oriented aspects, with particular attention to emerging trends current developments, and open challenges in gas monitoring technologies.

Topics include but are not limited to:

• Advanced gas sensors (e.g., electrochemical, optical, chemiresistive, photoacoustic);
• Novel sensing materials (e.g., nanomaterials, 2D materials, functional coatings);
• Low-power gas sensing systems;
• Distributed and wireless sensor networks for gas monitoring;
• Gas sensing in harsh and industrial environments;
• Air quality and environmental monitoring;
• Detection of greenhouse gases and pollutants;
• Gas sensing for hydrogen technologies and energy systems;
• Integration with IoT and data analytics for smart monitoring;
• Physico-chemical modeling of gas sensing mechanisms.
